SHORT CV
Dr. Yiannis S. Boutalis received the diploma of Electrical Engineer in 1983 from Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH), Greece and the PhD degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 1988 from the Computer Science Division of National Technical University of Athens, Greece.
Since 1996, he has been a faculty member at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of DUTH, where, after serving at the ranks of Lecturer, Assistant and Associate Professor, he is now Professor, Director of the Laboratory of Automatic Control Systems and Robotics. He also served as the Chair of the Department from 2015-2020. In the past, he has worked as a contract Assistant Professor (PD 407) at the University of Thessaly, Greece and as a contract professor at the School of Aeronautical Engineering (SMA) of Hellenic Air Force Academy. He also worked as a researcher at the Institute of Language and Speech Processing (ILSP), Greece, and as CEO of Ideatech S.A., a company active in the development of pattern recognition and signal processing applications. Dr. Boutalis has so far developed collaborations with 6 universities and research institutes abroad and has been repeatedly, as a visiting scholar, at the Institute of Automation of the Technical University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in Germany.
His current research interests focus on the development of computational intelligence techniques with applications to problems of automatic control, renewable energy sources, electric machine control, robotics, pattern recognition and signal and image processing and analysis.
Dr. Boutalis teaches courses in Automatic Control Systems, Robotics and Computational Intelligence at both undergraduate and graduate levels. He has authored 3 books to support his teaching work and is a co-author of 2 books and 14 book chapters published by foreign publishing houses. In addition, he has published more than 200 papers in international scientific journals and proceedings of international conferences. Finally, Dr. Boutalis has supervised a number of doctoral and postgraduate theses that have been completed (25 by 2025 – 12 Phds, 13 Masters), while he is the supervisor of doctoral and postgraduate theses that are in progress.
