Course Description

Basics in Quantummechanics: photons, interaction between radiation and solid state materials, generation of electromagnetic radiation, radiometric and photometric quantities. Semiconductor light sources: luminescent diodes, display units. Laser Diodes: operation principle, properties, materials, applications. Light detectors. Photoconductors: operation principle, properties, materials, applications. Photo Diodes: operation principle, properties, materials, applications. Phototransistors: Bipolar, FET. Photothyristors. Advanced photodiodes. Semiconductor photo-cathodes. Image aquisition units and integrated photosensors: camera tube with photodiode matrix, prinziples of integrated semiconductor image sensors. Charge Injection Devices (CID). Charge–Cuppled Devices (CCD). Optical couplers: operation principle and properties, basic circuits.
