Course Description

Introduction. Waveguiding-propagating modes in single mode, step and graded refractive index fibers. Effects due to material and waveguide dispersion. Transmission of pulsed signals. Optical waveguides losses. Measurements. Optical transmitters: characteristics of phototransmitters and diode lasers, frequency spectrum, modulation and optical signal multiplexing. Optical receivers: Photodetectors (PIN and APD), noise, optical signals demodulation (direct and coherent). Design of optical communication system: link budget, stages specifications, bit error rate and signal-to-noise ratio.
