Course Description

Introduction to telecommunication networks, network evolution. Design Principles. Circuit and Packet Switching. Multiplexing. Multi-layer architecture, services, management, architectural models. Physical Layer, short introduction to the principles, techniques, transmission systems. Data link layer, error correction, retransmission protocols, design, operational correctness, performance. Multiple access, principles, protocols, local networks, ethernet, rings, IEEE standards (802.3, 802.4, 802.5 και 802.2), local high-speed networks (FDDI), wireless local networks (802.11), Bluetooth (802.15). Network Layer, service with and without connection, virtual circuits, routing. Wide-Area Networks (WAN). Wired and Wireless Field Area Networks, Multiprotocol Label Switching – MPLS, Power Line Communications – PLC, Home Area networks – HAN, delays and priorities, Quality of Service (QoS).
