Course Description

Atomic bonds, atomic and ionic magnitudes – cohesive energy in solid materials. Crystal structure: crystallic and amorphous materials. Unit cell, crystal systems, lattices, plains. Metallic structures, semiconductors structures, covalent and ionic ceramics and polymers. Allotropism-polymorphism. Alloys. Technical structures: superlattices and quantum wells. Thermal properties of crystals: thermal expansion, thermal specific heat, thermal conduction. Electrical conductivity in metals and alloys. Metal surfaces. Superconductivity. Thermoelectric effect. Dielectric properties of materials: dielectric constant and polarity, dielectric losses, piezoelectric effect, ceramics and organic insulators. Magnetism: diamagnetism and paramagnetism, Maser, Faraday effect, materials and applications, biological materials.
