The academic year begins on<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>September 1st each year<\/strong>, ends on<strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>August 31st of the next year<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>and consists of two semesters:<strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>fall and spring<\/strong>. Each semester consists of<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>13 weeks of lectures and two weeks of examinations<\/strong>. The department holds regularly scheduled teaching classes at four auditoriums and more than twenty classrooms and labs at the Kimmeria campus.<\/p>\n<p>Courses take place during the first<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>9 academic semesters<\/strong>, while in the<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>10th semester, students elaborate on their Diploma dissertations<\/strong>. The courses that take place during the<strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>first 5 semesters<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>are the same for all students and are referred as<strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>core courses<\/strong>. From the<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>6th semester to the 9th, students can specialize in a general scientific area.<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>The available specialization areas are<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>Electrical Energy, Electronic and Information Systems, and Telecommunications and Space<\/strong>. During the ninth semester, students select their courses from one of the specialization topics. Additionally, in the beginning of the ninth semester, they choose their Diploma dissertation topics, which is obligatory for graduation.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>Since 2003-2004, undergraduate students can be hired for<strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>two-month internships in Greek companies<\/strong>.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>All courses, both Core and Specialized, are characterized by<strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>Credit Units<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>(CU).
